The St. Louis Blues Can Win Because…:
They finally have a bit of confidence.
To the media, it’s been surprising to see how cool and calm head coach Davis Payne has been during the All-Star break while his team has been nose-diving right in front of him. After a flat effort against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday, the Blues regrouped and earned a win against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday.
Granted, beating the worst team in the NHL isn’t a huge accomplishment but when a team is as bad as the Blues have been, the turnaround has to start with baby steps.
The Blues potted five goals against Edmonton. Considering they had just six in their previous three games combined, that’s a positive step. They also got Andy McDonald back in the lineup for the contest and – maybe not so coincidentally – the Blues have struggled with him missing. He had missed the last 24 games with a concussion but he had been the team’s leading scorer prior to injury.
Now they just need to build on this solid effort and carry it over into Sunday’s game.

The Tampa Bay Lightning Can Win Because…:
The St Louis Blues have lost their way. It’s hard to believe they were 20-12-5 after a win on December 31st but since that clock struck midnight, they have just three wins. Two of their victories have come against the Los Angeles Kings and one was against the league-worst Oilers. That makes just three wins in their last 13 games.
Meanwhile, Tampa Bay is in good standing in the Eastern Conference. They are in first place in the Southeast Division and still hold a three-point lead even after a home loss to the Washington Capitals on Friday. They are second overall in the conference.
The Lightning are 17-5-2 at home this season and they rarely lose at the St. Pete Times Forum – let along back-to-back home games. Their seven home losses are the fewest in the NHL.
The Blues are feeling blue with their goaltending situation as starter Jaroslav Halak is coming off an embarrassing month. He was acquired in the offseason with the expectation of being one of the key reasons that the Blues are competitive this season but he has just two wins in his last nine starts while posting a GAA of 3.39. Tampa Bay will tee-off on him if he’s in net.
